Monday 16th September

Had a lovely drive to Dover, went the long way around the bays and back the main road. Bitterly cold winds off the Atlantic ocean and mountains. Saw the Huon Salmon farm and restaurant. Many bays and Adamsons Peak had snow so that was a bonus, Here’s some of the shots for the day.

Day 109

Friday 19th June

Well we got cleaned up packed up and on the road at 10.30 am. On our way out of Seven Mile beach we saw Mt Wellington was covered in snow on the tops, frost on the ground everywhere. Had a good run through stopped off at Oatlands and had lunch,  took some photos. The windmill was working and they were bagging oats. I bought some of their oats, spelt flour wholemeal,  and light wholemeal, was very interested learning about the spelt, all there wheat, oats and spelt are gown locally, the farmers get there share by selling direct to Oatlands, its an amazing business they have.  From there we pushed it as it was already getting late and we don’t want to be late setting up. Arrived at Legana 3.30 pm, got set up as its getting cold. Bought a cooked chook and coleslaw for tea. We were in bed at 8.30 pm as even with the heater on full it was very cold.

Day 106, 107, 108

Tuesday 16th June
Went through to Richmond, then onto Tea Tree and out onto the high way to get to East Derwent to get over to Glenorchy on the west side of Derwent, very low fog, very bleak and drizzly, very cold as well, so didn’t spend much time to get back to unit and veggie out in the afternoon. No photo’s today.
Wednesday 17th June
Very wet, low cloud so we are not going anywhere. Catching up on washing, etc as we only have until Friday when we head off to Launceston.
Catching up on some video’s. No photo’s today.
Thursday 18th June.
Last day to tiki tour so we are off early to the city and Cascade Brewery and Mt Wellington, Had a awesome day, the sun came out at the right time at cascade brewery, then I could see it snowing on Mt Wellington so off we go and yes we got snowed on, only light snow but still fun, the cloud was very low. From there we went down to Battery Point and parked, did a bit of looking around, then got the car and drove to find a place to have our lunch. The black clouds were coming over fast so we ate and ran, back up to Mt Wellington and got snowed on some more, heavier this time, then Don went into a building and a chap was sitting by a fire while waiting for the weather to improve, so we stood by the fire and chattered to him lovely watching it snowing by a fire. Got back to the unit early afternoon and enjoyed the last of it , we leave for Launceston in the morning.

All these buildings are being used for arts, cafe’s, etc.. I don’t know what they were previously but thought they may of been wharf storage sheds in early days.

Day 67

Thursday 7th May

All packed up early and ready to head back to Launceston, vehicle due for big service. Beautiful day but that wind has ice in it.

IMG_6484  First glimpse of snow on Mt Roland, very pretty, know wonder I could feel ice in that wind.IMG_6486  Every time we go past here we get punnet or two of Raspberries, and some chocolate coated ones as well, very nice treats, make them last as well, 🙂 We actually had morning tea here and they made me a gluten free pancake, I was so very grateful, Thanks Christmas Hills.IMG_6494  Just a shot while travelling.IMG_6496  Here back at our base and there is snow on the hills outside of Launceston. Still in Lake Tekapo area.

Wednesday 8th August.

6.50 am still black outside, sunrises about 7.45 am at the moment. Rained most of the night that I could hear and very cold. Well wasnt long and then I realised that snow was falling onto the windows of the camper, so we went out and it was very steady fall, we could see thru the fog that Mt John had a fair bit of snow  laying on the ground from last night. So we got packed up and went down to the Good Shepherd Church and got heaps of shots, was so awesome. We fuelled up and started heading up to Mt Cook, there was snow everywhere. Got to Mt Cook where the turn off is to go to Tasman Glacier, low cloud and white with snow beautiful sight. It is 2.45 pm by now.The cloud covered Mt Cook but we did the walk up to Tasman Glacier, not a good view due to cloud but did see the icebergs floating in the Tasman lake. We have run into a couple from Tekapo when staying there so was nice to catch up with them. It started to snow heavy while we were up the tops so made a start to get back down to the car park. We then headed to Twizel, had a quick look around and carried onto Lake Ohau. We stayed at the Round Hut Bush Camp, freedom camping. Going to be very cold tonight so we tucked the camper van up under the trees, we are also under a mountain range.

Lake Ohau

Lake Ohau, very cold night but look what we woke up to, magic, and it’s free camping 🙂

Off to the airport we go.

Monday 9th June

7.50 am sunrise, colour in the clouds is red, very cold and looks like a snow sky to me. We did all our clean up of the campervan we hired, did all fill ups and returned it on our way to the airport for our flight at 2.45 pm, had to be there 2 hours prior. My cousin met us at the Maui hire center and drive us to airport. By this time it was very cold and icy winds, I said to my cousin just drop us off and get home into the warm house so she did. Got our luggage all wrapped and bags checked in. Our flight was delayed for boarding because of a flat Tyre, we were watching the snow falling onto the tarmac and it’s getting heavier and heavier, I was not feeling very happy about this take off I cant tell you. By the time we did board and seated the amount of snow on the wings, now I;m really feeling uncomfortable, and yes you are right, I do not like flying at all. But it is a great way to get around, so I get on with it. We are sitting down at the end of runway for 1/2 hour to see if the snow was going to ease up, in the end they announced that it was going to get heavier and the flight was aborted, I was so happy :))))  The airline was extremely good to us, they put up the people that were happy to stay back and let families and children take the first available flights, so of course we said go for it, we will wait as long as it takes, so another two days in a motel, all meals paid for and a shuttle back to airport when we need it, we were very grateful. Christchurch, here we come, we hired a wee juicy car and headed back to my cousins, they got a big shock to see us walk in the door. We stayed at the Motel close to the airport and did heaps of tiki-touring around in the snow, was awesome and cold.
